business - Course 2 Step 3

Build a website

Watch the video to discover how to build your website

If you are feeling like this is too much for you, you can use a website building company to do this part for you. They normally charge around R3000-R5000 for a very basic 4 page website but that is really the easy part and you should be able to it yourself within a couple of hours. I would suggest you rather use a website developer once it starts getting tricky.

You have 3 options

Build it yourself

  • Free
  • Difficult
  • Time consuming
  • Total control
  • Can make your own changes
  • You may not get the look you want
  • You might not get the functionality you want

Get a developer

  • R3000-R5000 entry level
  • No hassles
  • You may wait long
  • Very little control
  • Can't make changes
  • You may not get the look you want
  • You might not get the functionality you want

Thrive Themes

  • 19$ a month paid 12 months in advance = about R3042
  • Moderately easy
  • Total control
  • Full customization
  • Great tutorials to help you every step of the way
  • Excellent customer support
  • Cool features like Quizz builder
  • Opt in pop ups
  • Awesome templates
  • Can do landing pages
  • Facebook comment enabled
  • A/B testing options
  • High converting pages and funnels
  • Marketing tutorials

You can see above that Thrive themes is just an amazing product. If you have ever tried building a website (the free option) you will know that choosing the right theme (the look and feel template) is vitally important. Sometimes it doesn't offer the changeability of colours, spacing and features that you need and then you have to end up changing your theme and starting from scratch which can be a HUGE frustration! Then you have plugins (back end programs) which clash against one another resulting in your website not being able to what you wanted it to and having to pay developers to fix it anyway.

Thrive Themes is  a program that is installed onto your wordpress site which allows you to FULLY customize your look and feel for every page. They also give you some great templates if you want to save some time and make it look professional. Not only do these templates look great, but they can also be used as landing pages (they just remove the logo and menu part of your website on that page) and are built for conversion and funneling so it saves you from having to figure all that stuff out.

Now, if you are not sold yet, they have excellent tutorials (which you can watch before you sign up) that explains everything in step by step videos. If you get stuck there is a forum with questions and answers and if you don't find what you are looking for, you can just submit a question and you hear back from them almost immediately.

Ok, I'm almost done selling you on Thrive themes...they just get me so excited! They also give you all kinds of cool marketing "tools" like QUIZZ BUILDER, countdown features and Facebook commenting on your website.

One last thing....you can use one membership on up to 25 websites!!!!!

Ok I'm done!

If you would like to be able to make your own changes and want a bit of control at least but are afraid or don't have the time to do it yourself, we can build your site for you using Thrive Themes so that you can just take over once we are done.

Step 1

You need to choose a theme. This determines the "look and feel" of your website. (You are now logged into the back end of your website. The URL will be something like www.mywebsite/wp-admin/)

On the left hand menu go to "Appearance" and then "Customize"

There you can choose a theme. You will see that at first it doesn't give you very many to choose from but in the search bar type in "total". You will see now it will give you hundreds of themes to choose from. You can then refine your search to find specific features it must have like woo-commerce (means you can sell things) or a specific colour. I personally prefer TOTAL theme as it is very flexible and you can do almost anything with it. You can chop and change your theme as much as you want but keep in mind that every time you do that, you will have to rebuild the site all over again as everything you loaded before will be lost. So I suggest that once you install a theme, add your photos (play with the customize settings in that same menu where you changed the theme) and see if the look will work for you before you add any pages and other info. Remember that whichever theme you choose, the pictures can be changed so don't get caught up by them being "wrong" for your site. The "look and feel" is all about where the pictures and text blocks and menus and things are situated, not about what is in the pictures.

To get the maximum benefit from the TOTAL theme, you will have to upgrade to the PRO version, which will cost about R1000 but it is quite worth it when you realize how limited other themes are. But...maybe you can get away with a free theme depending on what you want to do.

Step 2

Once you are sure that the theme is right for you, exit that screen and go back to the DASHBOARD where you have the black menu on your left (the computer's right). Now go to "Plugins" just under "Appearance". Go to "Add new".

In the search bar search for the following plugins and install and activate them one by one:

Woocommerce

Woocommerce Payfast gateway

Page builder

WP Forms light

If there is anything specific you get stuck on you can just Google it, there are literally thousands of Wordpress tutorial videos available as well as blogs and question and answer websites.

You now have all the tools you need to make a good website. We will come back to them later to do the settings on each one.

Step 3

Go to "pages", "Add new"

Here you create a page for each thing that you want. You do not make pages for products, those you create under the "PRODUCTS" tab.

Step 4

Go to "products", "Add new"

Here you create your product that you will be selling.

Remember to add the prices

Step 5

Link it all together
